Fireside Chat – Virtual Travel Photography

April 15, 2020 by Darlene Hildebrandt

Updated: April 15, 2020

We’re trying out something new here at Digital Photo Mentor called Fireside Chats. In this episode (hopefully the first of many to come), I chat with three of my fellow photographers about travel photography.

Virtual travel photography

Join me (Canada), Daniel Korzeniewski (lives in Miami but from Argentina), Kav Dadfar (in the UK), and Ugo Cei (from Italy, near Milan) for a truly international flavored discussion as we talk about some of our favorite and most influential images.

Gain some tips that will help you with your travel photography. Maybe you’ll even get inspired to choose your first destination of where you’re going to head once we’re all allowed out of the house again.

Let’s go!

The images

Here are some of the images we discussed in the video.

The image above was created by using a small LED light called a Lume Cube. We mounted it to a small Manfrotto table-top tripod and Ugo held it up for me, then I returned the favor and held it for him and the workshop participants.

They aren’t all that inexpensive but they put out a lot of light, are small and portable and USB chargeable. Super handy for travel photography when you just need a little kick of light and don’t want to haul around flashes and softboxes, or aren’t allowed to use flash (as was the case above).

Bucketlist items

Many of the trips I have taken recently involved ticking off some bucket list items for me including a few big ones like:

  • Attending the Pushkar Camel Fair in India (image below).
  • Photographing the Venice Carnival (to read more about that CLICK HERE).
  • Seeing the hot spring loving snow monkeys in Japan, and just visiting Japan in general, was huge for me.

In case you aren’t familiar with the term, FOMO is an acronym for Fear Of Missing Out.

Snow monkeys in Yudanaka, Japan was on top of my bucket list for a long time.

Don’t you just love their little faces? I stayed and watched them for over 4 hours. There are no fences – they walk right past you, wild Japanese Macaque monkeys.

My friends rented and dressed up in kimonos and we created this shot of an iconic temple in Kyoto. They are being lit by their cell phones only.

Where are you going to go when you get the chance?

At the end of the video, we all talked about where we want to travel to next, once we get the opportunity to do so. Some of the places mentioned were China, eastern Europe, and Turkey.

I also would totally go back and do Venice Carnival again (maybe you can join Ugo, and possibly me, in Venice next time) and Dan, Kav and I have a standing date to meet in Japan (Kav had food FOMO last time from all the photos I shared).

Please share in the comments below one or two of your favorite travel photos that you’ve taken, and tell us where you wanna go when you get the chance?
