Luminar AI – Overview of Templates and the New Interface

December 16, 2020 by Darlene Hildebrandt

Updated: January 5, 2022

Luminar AI is now out in the world. So if you pre-ordered, you should already have a copy and be testing it out. If you aren’t sure where to start, I’ve done a video to show you how to use the new templates in your workflow. Give it a watch and get an overview of the new Luminar AI interface and what this software can do for your images.

Luminar AI – template workflow

Templates have basically replaced Looks which you will be familiar with if you have Luminar 4. They are very similar in function but Skylum has taken it step farther and now templates are suggested for you.

Here is a little before and after example of where I too one of my images starting with a template. This is not how I edited it originally but I think I prefer the new version.

My first edited version done using Lightroom.

New version using Luminar AI – the template gave me the idea to add fog and make it mystical and it really works for this image!

But you do not have to use the templates at all if you don’t want to. Simply hit D on your keyboard to go straight to the Edit tab and go to work using the tools as you see fit.

Give the video a watch now and you’ll see how I processed this image and a couple others with Luminar AI and templates.

Overall there are a lot of similarities between Luminar 4 and AI, with a few new things.

What’s new in Luminar AI

The biggest change between Luminar 4 and Luminar AI is actually under the hood. The program has been completely recoded to run much faster.

I can attest to that being true. Notice how fast it loaded that folder of images in the video above.

Secondly, they’ve added a few new AI (Artificial Intelligence) tools such as:

  • Composition AI (including cropping suggestions, tilt correction, and perspective correction)
  • Atmosphere AI
  • Iris and Body AI in the portrait tools

Atmosphere AI was applied to this image to add the fog. It’s so smart it can figure out distances in your image and have the fog retreat or advance in your image.

Also improved is the Erase tool (it no longer adds layer upon layer making the program bog down) and Optics (lens corrections).

You’ll notice that layers are now gone, but you can still do most of the things that were possible before. Sky Replacement has been improved and in early 2021 it will be updated to also handle reflections in water.

Copying settings from one image to another

There are a few ways you can copy settings from one image to another, or to an entire set of images.

  1. Simply press Cmd/Ctrl + C to copy the adjustments from one image, and Cmd/Ctrl + V to paste to the desired one. Note: it copies all the adjustments including any masks you have applied.
  2. Save the adjustments are your own template and then apply it to any image. Note: do not save any tools that are masked or brushed in like Dodge/Burn which are image specific. Save your template before doing those.
  3. Sync adjustments by selecting several images, make sure the one you want to copy is highlighted. Then right-click and choose Adjustments > Sync Adjustments.

AI Photo Editing: Read my review of Luminar Neo, the next generation photo editing using AI. It’s an industry game changer. If you’ve already got it, enrolling in my Luminar Neo course should be able to get you up and editing in days instead of weeks. Check it out.

More examples and more to come

Here are a few more examples of what you can do with the software.

If you are new to photo editing I highly recommend you consider getting Luminar AI. It’s much easier and more fun to use that many of the other editing software on the market.

Your turn – what have you created?

Now it’s over to you. If you already have Luminar AI I’d love to see what you’ve created with it. Share your before and after images in the comments below and tell us how you did it.

If you are new to editing or to Luminar – I suggest you give it a go! It’s the program I recommend for total beginners as a stand alone.

Or if you already use Lightroom or Photoshop you can add it as a plugin and have access to all the tools as a Smart Filter.
