Luminar AI is now out in the world. So if you pre-ordered, you should already have a copy and be testing it out. If you aren’t sure where to start, I’ve done a video to show you how to use the new templates in your workflow. Luminar AI – template workflow
Templates have basically replaced Looks which you will be familiar with if you have Luminar 4. They are very similar in function but Skylum has taken it step farther and now templates are suggested for you.
Here is a little before and after example of where I too one of my images starting with a template. This is not how I edited it originally but I think I prefer the new version.
But you do not have to use the templates at all if you don’t want to. Simply hit D on your keyboard to go straight to the Edit tab and go to work using the tools as you see fit.

Overall there are a lot of similarities between Luminar 4 and AI, with a few new things.
What’s new in Luminar AI
The biggest change between Luminar 4 and Luminar AI is actually under the hood. The program has been completely recoded to run much faster.
I can attest to that being true. Notice how fast it loaded that folder of images in the video above.
Secondly, they’ve added a few new AI (Artificial Intelligence) tools such as:
- Composition AI (including cropping suggestions, tilt correction, and perspective correction)
- Atmosphere AI
- Iris and Body AI in the portrait tools
Also improved is the Erase tool (it no longer adds layer upon layer making the program bog down) and Optics (lens corrections).
You’ll notice that layers are now gone, but you can still do most of the things that were possible before. Sky Replacement has been improved and in early 2021 it will be updated to also handle reflections in water.
Copying settings from one image to another
There are a few ways you can copy settings from one image to another, or to an entire set of images.
- Simply press Cmd/Ctrl + C to copy the adjustments from one image, and Cmd/Ctrl + V to paste to the desired one. Note: it copies all the adjustments including any masks you have applied.
- Save the adjustments are your own template and then apply it to any image. Note: do not save any tools that are masked or brushed in like Dodge/Burn which are image specific. Save your template before doing those.
- Sync adjustments by selecting several images, make sure the one you want to copy is highlighted. Then right-click and choose Adjustments > Sync Adjustments.
