Lesson 4 – HDR Panoramas in Lightroom Classic & Luminar Neo

  1. HDR Photography the Right Way
  2. Lesson 4 – HDR Panoramas in Lightroom Classic & Luminar Neo

HDR Photography Course Advanced Techniques Lesson 4

Capturing a wide, dramatic scene is tricky—especially when it combines bright skies with dark landscapes. That’s where HDR panoramas come in. By merging both bracketed exposures and panoramic frames, you’ll create sweeping images that hold detail across the entire tonal range.

In this lesson, you’ll see how to use Lightroom Classic’s Photo Merge HDR Panorama tool and Luminar Neo’s Panorama Stitching with HDR Merge workflow. You’ll learn when to use each, how to choose the right projection mode, and what to do if moving subjects cause ghosting or stitching errors.

What You’ll Learn in This Lesson

HDR panoramas combine two challenges—stitching and exposure blending—so it’s easy to make mistakes. This lesson shows you the exact steps to merge your frames smoothly, balance tonal range, and create natural-looking results without distortion or harsh seams.

  • How to prepare bracketed exposures for HDR panorama merging
  • Lightroom’s Photo > Photo Merge > HDR Panorama process explained
  • Differences between HDR Merge and HDR Panorama Merge
  • When to use Auto Crop or Boundary Warp for clean edges
  • Choosing projection modes (spherical, cylindrical, Mercator, plane, fisheye)
  • Luminar Neo HDR Panorama workflow with ghost reduction
  • How to fix motion artifacts, vignettes, or dark seams in stitched images
  • Organizing HDR pano files for easy comparison and editing

Common Questions About HDR Panoramas

Here are just some of the questions about stitching panoramic images this lesson will help you answer:

Why can’t I see HDR Merge in Luminar Neo?

If HDR Merge isn’t showing, it usually means your Luminar Neo is outdated or your license doesn’t include it. Update to the latest version and confirm your subscription or lifetime plan. Access your My Software account to check, then reinstall if needed.

Steps to fix:

  • Update Luminar Neo to the latest release.
  • Check your license type (subscription vs. older perpetual).
  • Upgrade if your plan predates HDR Merge.

Do I need a subscription or lifetime license for HDR Merge?

Yes—HDR Merge availability depends on which Luminar Neo license you purchased. Subscriptions always include it, but older lifetime licenses may not. If HDR Merge is missing, log in to your Skylum account and upgrade to the newest plan for full access.

How do I choose the right ghost reduction setting?

Pick your ghost reduction strength based on how much motion is in your scene. Use Low for minor shifts like light leaves, Medium for clouds or moving people, and High/Highest when motion is strong. Always test by previewing the results before merging.

Why does my HDR look flat, and how can I fix it in Luminar Neo?

HDR merges can look muted at first because they preserve maximum tonal data. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to use Accent AI, Sky Enhancer, and manual tonal adjustments to bring back depth, contrast, and color while keeping the HDR natural, not overprocessed.

Can I merge multiple HDR sets at once?

Yes. Luminar Neo’s Batch HDR feature lets you combine multiple sets automatically. The software groups bracketed exposures into sets, applies your chosen settings, and merges them together. Always double-check its grouping accuracy before clicking Merge to ensure clean results.

This Lesson Is Perfect For You If…

  • You’ve mastered HDR capture but struggle to get natural results in Luminar Neo
  • You want to understand every HDR Merge setting and when to use it
  • You’re tired of ghosting, distortion, or flat HDR images
  • You want to speed up your workflow with batch merging and organized file management

Live photo editing demonstrations

If you attend our weekly photo editing Livestream on YouTube you can also ask Darlene questions there. She will answer them and demonstrate the solution live.

We broadcast live for 60-90 minutes every two weeks on Sundays at either 2:00 pm or 6:00 pm EST (alternating after each session). Darlene edits subscriber-submitted images using Lightroom, Luminar Neo, and Photoshop. It’s a great way to learn some new skills, pick up some tips, and get inspired to edit your photos. Come ask some questions and join in on the conversation.
